Detoxification Process

Understanding the profound changes to the body and brain chemistry caused by substance abuse and addiction, and the safe reversal of these effects are important factors during the detoxification process.  Aside from recognizing that substance abuse or addiction is a problem, detox (short for detoxification) takes top priority as the first step in the drug or alcohol rehabilitation process.

Detox is a “must” for any person to fully recover as his or her body must work to remove those toxic chemicals and their byproducts introduced by either drugs or alcohol.

Detox is the process of not only eradicating the body of those harmful chemicals, but helping a person to get past the violent cravings experienced during withdrawal and finding a level of functionality based on no physical dependency of any sort for drugs or alcohol.

The detox process is meant to prepare a patient for enrollment into a treatment or rehab facility to better understand their substance abuse disease and illness and invent new ways to live life without these harmful agents being present and negatively affecting their daily lives.  Too often, an addict or substance abuser might think that he can get through this detoxification process on his own or with the help of a family member; however, it is crucial that this process and the person are closely monitored by medical and detox professionals to ensure the highest level of safety and recovery success.
