Detoxification Facilities and Programs

Detoxification can be done on both an outpatient basis (mental health centers, addiction clinics or private clinics) or inpatient (hospital or residential treatment center). Inpatient detoxification allows the patient to be closely monitored, avoids exposure to the substance of abuse, and can speed up the process of detoxification. Outpatient detoxification has the advantage of being less disruptive to the patient's life and less expensive. The choice of setting depends on many factors such as the drug of abuse, amount and length of history of abuse, psychosocial issues, patient's age, and co-existing medical and/or psychiatric conditions among others.

Drug rehab and addiction treatment programs and facilities can have their own detoxification programs with in the program or they could have arrangements with a near-by detoxification center. Many detoxification programs are held in clinics or hospitals. Detoxification program should always be monitored by a licensed and qualified addiction or medical professional. There are many different types of detoxification programs, the two main types are medical and holistic.

Medical Detoxification

Medical detoxification programs uses drugs and other medical treatments in order to accomplish detoxification. Many times this is done within a clinic or hospital environment. Sometimes this type of treatment is recommended for severe and long lasting addictions to heavily addictive substances. Medical detoxification programs can be accomplished in inpatient and sometimes in outpatient facilities. An Inpatient detoxification allows close monitoring of the patient ruing the detoxification process.

Rapid Detoxification

In this procedure drug withdrawal occurs while patients are asleep under general anesthesia.

Stepped Rapid Detoxification

This approach using the slower oral and subcutaneous routes rid the body of the opiate more slowly than intravenous Rapid Detoxification .

Ultra Rapid Detoxification

This accelerates the withdrawal process, pushing them into 100% detoxification within a 5-30 minute period.

Outpatient Detoxification

Outpatient medical detoxification is usually safe and effective for people who are more likely to have mild to moderate withdrawal symptoms.

Holistic Detoxification Programs

A holistic program takes a non-drug approach to detoxification. This approach does not think that using drugs to replace or exchange and addiction is beneficial to the addiction treatment recovery process. A holistic approach uses mineral, vitamins, and a healthy diet to assist in the withdrawal of an addict. Many time exercise and sauna's are used to assist the addict in cleansing the body of the addictive substance and drug residue. These programs are also monitored very closely by professional and medical personnel.

Sauna Detoxification

Sauna's are used to sweat out the drug toxins within the body that trigger cravings and withdrawal symptoms.
