Drug Detox
Synthetic compounds in prescription and illegal drugs remain in the body long after use of the drug has stopped. These chemicals cause withdrawal symptoms that can be intense or dangerous, requiring professional medical detox.
Under medically supervised detox, clients are in a controlled environment with 24/7 monitoring of withdrawal symptoms to ensure a safe detox process. During this time, all traces of the drugs are purged from the body to eliminate cravings and prepare the person to undergo a rehabilitation program. This is the first step in recovery, and a crucial one at that. Until the body is cleansed of these chemicals, the cravings will continue, and relapse is very likely. In most cases, detox is required before entering a treatment program.
Successful detox can be achieved by applying different approaches or methods such as:
- Medical Detox: uses gradually decreased does of a drug similar to the drug being abused.
- Rapid Detox: opiate blockers such as Naloxone, Naltrexone or Methodone are administered while under general anesthesia, usually over a four to eight hour time frame.
- Ultra Rapid Detox: the client is under general anesthesia, combined with Naltrexone, achieving detox within 30 minutes and can be risky or even painful for the person involved.
- Stepped Rapid Detox: involves oral doses of Naltrexone, or subcutaneous administration of Narcan while the person is fully awake and communicative.
Following successful detox, the client is ready to participate in learning how to better cope with daily stress and situations without involving mind numbing drugs. They learn about the underlying reasons for the addiction, develop a greater sense of accountability for their own behavior, and learn what triggers to watch for when attempting to reintegrate into to society once again. Successful recovery depends on a carefully executed detox process immediately followed by a comprehensive rehab program.
